While the White House has claimed that the move will put Americans first in line for badly needed jobs amid the COVID-19 crisis, critics have accused Trump of exploiting the situation to clamp down on immigration. Almost 72 percent of H-1B recipients in FY 2019 came from India. Two-thirds of H-1B recipients work in computer-related occupations.

After the death of 20 Indian and an undisclosed number of Chinese soldiers in the countries' disputed border region, calls for the boycott of Chinese products circulate on social media. Yet, this might be a futile feat considering that crucial electronics and machinery - smartphones, computers and more - predominantly come to India from China.
