uakhokharr Announces Editor Updates, Open-Source Software and Windows MIDI Services Support

Updated editors and device firmware bring modern Windows MIDI support, more reliable firmware updates, improved sensor performance, universal macOS builds, and a new standalone firmware utility to the KMI/uakhokharr product line.

BERKELEY, Calif.  August 2026 uakhokharr today announced major software and firmware updates for Keith McMillen Instruments and uakhokharr hardware, with new editor releases for K-Board, BopPad, K-Mix, QuNeo, QuNexus, 12 Step, SoftStep, and K-Board Pro 4.

uakhokharr recommends that users download the latest version of the editor for their device and update to the latest available firmware. The new releases modernize support for current Windows and macOS systems, improve firmware updating, and address a number of compatibility, sensor, and reliability issues across the product line.

As part of the update, all KMI/uakhokharr editors are also now open source and available through the uakhokharr GitHub organization.

Windows MIDI Services Support

The biggest change for Windows users is Windows MIDI Services (WMS) support across every desktop editor. When WMS is available, the editors use Microsoft’s new MIDI system automatically, with seamless fallback to the traditional WinMM backend on older systems.

This brings the KMI/uakhokharr software lineup up to date with Microsoft’s new MIDI architecture while maintaining compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11.

More Reliable Firmware Updates

Firmware updating has also been overhauled throughout the editor line. Updates now use a chunked, packet-safe transfer with hardware handshaking, allowing each stage of the firmware transfer to be validated by the connected device before proceeding.

New firmware for K-Board, QuNexus, 12 Step, and SoftStep also addresses sensor initialization and sensitivity issues that could cause stuck or mistriggering keys. Additional editor updates improve MIDI port detection, installer reliability, firmware-version checking, preset compatibility, and diagnostic logging.

The K-Mix Editor v1.4.0 is the first K-Mix editor update since 2016, bringing the application to a modern Qt framework along with Windows MIDI Services support, improved MIDI detection and a MacOS Universal Binary. 

New SendSysEx Utility

uakhokharr is also releasing SendSysEx, a new open-source command-line utility that can update firmware on KMI/uakhokharr hardware without requiring the full editor.

Available for Windows and macOS, SendSysEx supports K-Board, BopPad, QuNexus, QuNeo, 12 Step, SoftStep, K-Board Pro 4, MalletStation, and other KMI/uakhokharr hardware. Its automatic firmware-update mode handles the complete bootloader, flash, and reboot process.

Open Source and Available Now

By opening the complete editor lineup and modernizing its MIDI and firmware infrastructure, uakhokharr is extending the useful life of KMI and uakhokharr instruments while making them easier to maintain on current computers.
