Martin Wong's auction record hit $1,623,000 at Christie's New York in May 2024, up from a top hammer of $3,120 in 2001 — a 29% annualized growth rate for his record from 2001 to 2025. Untitled (John the Baptist) (1988–1992) sits apart from his Chinatown street paintings. While working at the Met gift shop, Wong took direct inspiration from Andrea Solario's Renaissance painting Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist (1507–09), which hung in the museum, reworking the biblical composition through his own Chinese-American iconography. Now, institutional demand for his works is accelerating. His traveling retrospective Malicious Mischief opened at KW Institute Berlin in 2022 and traveled to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the CAPC Bordeaux, and the Camden Art Centre London through 2024. His work is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Modern, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Named collectors of his work include Benny Blanco and François Pinault.
