Hello Akron,
It might be difficult to imagine, but it wasn’t too long ago that the 30-foot sycamore trees near Everett Covered Bridge in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park were tiny saplings.
Volunteers planted the trees 10 years ago. Now, when they visit the park, they can no longer identify which trees they planted because the area is so forested.
In 2012, staffers and volunteers began planting trees at CVNP to restore areas of the park affected by deforestation and construction. To date, about 33,000 trees have been planted, with 40,000 more planned.
“This park is exceptionally disturbed,” said Chris Davis, CVNP’s plant biologist. “People can think of that as a bad thing, but I think it's kind of a cool thing, because it gives us a good opportunity to still continue, even today, to make things so much better.”

Bicycle license requirement in Akron eliminated
In the “First I’ve ever heard of this” category, did you know that, prior to this week you needed to have a bicycle license in Akron?
None of us are in noncompliance at this point, though, as Akron City Council eliminated the requirement during its regular Monday meeting.

Celebrate Christmas in July at the Akron Zoo this weekend. The new event will feature inflatables, music, a water play area, mini golf, food trucks and plenty of holiday lights. Be sure to don your ugliest holiday sweater for a chance to win a prize. Zoo admission is $13-18 for adults and $5-$10 for children ages 2 to 14. Christmas in July runs Friday through Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. |

The Akron Art Expo returns to Hardesty Park for its 47th year Saturday and Sunday. Peruse art from more than 100 local, regional and national artists practicing across a variety of mediums. Guests can also enjoy live music from Scott Sopata, Akron Symphonic Winds, Euphoria Pleasant and Raven Rae as well as refreshments from nine food vendors. The festival is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. |

The Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival will kick off its 52nd season with the Ohio Contemporary Ballet on Friday and Saturday at Forest Lodge Park. The free performances take place each day at 8:45 p.m. Guests with kids might want to arrive early for the pre-show children’s dance activities at 7:45 p.m. Can’t make this weekend’s performances? The festival continues the next two weekends with Dayton Contemporary Dance Co. and Inlet Dance Theatre. |
